How will your project improve the way news and information are delivered to geographic communities?

This question has not yet been answered.

How is your idea innovative? (New or different from what already exists.)

Shrink geographical and ideological space that inhibits communication between communities

Nevada faces several challenges as a state, but the state's most important challenge is to find ways to shrink the geographic and ideological space between citizens within the state. Nevada's land area is immense and dotted with rural communities that exist between the state's two urban centers; Reno in Northern Nevada and Las Vegas in Southern Nevada. The state must increasingly rely upon technology to cover the needs of it's citizens.

We will build an online space using Wordpress as a Content Management System on a dedicated server. Registration will be open to all citizens. But the true innovation lies in our desire to shrink geographical space.

We want to shrink geographical and ideological space by increasing communication between rural and urban, northern and southern residents by engaging writers from all areas to engage in political, social, and cultural discussions. This has become even more important as the state now faced record budget deficits and failing tax structure. I would like to build an online community where the participants use each other as sounding boards and develop ideas and possible solutions for our state's challenges we can present to legislators and organizations that serve the citizens. The goal is to make the entire state local in terms of its approach to the state's larger issues.

Tracy Viselli will combine her social media and community building skills with the professional experience of Hugh Jackson (http://www.lasvegasgleaner.com) as an editor to build a vibrant online community through compelling content and influence.

What experience do you or your organization have to successfully develop this project?

Online Organizer, Social Media Professional, and Journalist

I have been on the internet since it was text-based. I have been a professional place and political blogger for four years and work in the social media industry--this is all professional experience I can use to build a community and promote is using social media tools. I want to use my online community building and organizing experience and combine it with social media tools and open source technology platforms (Wordpress and Drupal) to build an online space that beings Nevada citizens together for deep discussions about who we are, what we think, and who we want to become.

I have been involved in several citizen-driven, open sources political projects including Twitter Vote Report (http://www.twittervotereport.com) and the Voter Suppression Wiki (http://www.votersuppression.net).

Hugh Jackson has been a journalist and editor for over 20 years in the western states of Nevada and Montana. He now writes for the Las Vegas Gleaner (http://www.lasvegasgleaner.com).
