America's Waterway

Total cost of project including all sources of funding:
$2,000,000
Expected amount of time to complete project:
two to three years to fully launch

America’s Waterway has a goal of unifying the Mississippi River to build community-based, whole-river approaches to water quality, community development and cultural identity. Our goal rests on maximizing social networking and other Internet tools on behalf of the Mississippi in the same way political candidates and companies have built on-line communities for themselves. America’s Waterway expects this will result in the creation of a constituency that can take action to address the River’s issues as an entire system, rather than one problem and one location at a time.

In phase one, the case for America’s Waterway is made. Enewsletters in the form of blogs are being distributed, the River-Tube function of the Web site will be initiated in 2009, and we have begun to build the community by soliciting content from people along the River.

A second phase, scheduled for late 2009/early 2010, will focus on building the community. We will engage those residing on and interested in the River, in a national dialogue via telecommunication and on-the-ground facilitation. Using community foundations in 10 locations, we will ignite people’s awareness and solicit their input to collectively prioritize content and issues for the Web site.

A third phase – developed simultaneously – will be a vibrant and open access Web site that maximizes engagement, allowing a Mississippi River community to evolve and take hold. Its structure will be open access and conducive to all forms of social networking at the same time it provides resources for groups and individuals who want to learn about the issues and the River.

How will your project improve the way news and information are delivered to geographic communities?

America's Waterway

America's Waterway will fill the role of community connector for the Mississippi River. Traditionally news and information from newspapers and television have filled this role within geographic communities. For the Mississippi River, that connector hasn't existed because arbitrary barriers developed as a result of limited signal reach and market distribution capabilities. America’s Waterway can overcome these barriers by using social networking and other internet capacities to exchange information through out the whole-River community. Like traditional media, news and information is still key to building a sense of identity and a shared understanding that provides a base for coalitions and constituencies to be built for coordinated advocacy on behalf of whole-River solutions in the future.

The first phase of America’s Waterway is a case in point. While still being constructed, a blog and eventual “River Tube” will make news available from throughout the community providing information about programs and projects with implications for the whole River. Also in the future, improved feedback and linkage will expand opportunities to join forces on behalf the River’s character, condition and future.

How is your idea innovative? (New or different from what already exists.)

America's Waterway

America's Waterway is innovative in that it will tap the Internet and social networking on behalf of a natural resource, not an organization or group. For the Mississippi River, the Internet can overcome physical and cost barriers that have resulted in disjointed policy for the River for centuries. The idea is not unlike what is done when building a community of interest around an issue, only this time it is a natural resource of mammoth impact and importance to the U.S. and North America. The National Science Council and others have called for unified approaches to protect the River and address future development. America’s Waterway provides an innovative way to do that.

A second innovation is the goal to use communication and information – deliberately shared through out and supplied by the people along the River – as a catalyst for a constituency. It is the intention of America’s Waterway to let advocacy be a natural outgrowth of available connectivity, rather than having an agenda and building a Web site based on that agenda.

The final innovation will be to have America’s Waterway equipped with the most current social networking tools so that as regulation, structures and policy are suggested for the Mississippi, the community can have input and provide feedback in an unfettered and constructive way. America’s Waterway is intended to become the River’s channel to regulators and policy makers so that whole-River solutions can be developed.

What experience do you or your organization have to successfully develop this project?

America's Waterway

At this time, America’s Waterway relies on contractors with specific expertise in certain categories to augment the background and expertise of its founder, Anne Lewis. As the web site develops, it's anticipated that staff will be added. Right now, however, that background includes organizational and marketing communications for corporations, nonprofits, and political organizations; a master’s degree in communication, free-lance and occasional editorial page contributions; a brief stint as a public affairs television program host, media training consultation and political organizing education. Lobbying experience at the state and federal level, in conjunction with trade associations and unions, also informs the work of America's Waterway. In addition, service on the boards of directors for numerous nonprofits and cause-related organizations, together with the organization of numerous political events, supplements the background being used in this effort.
