Activity Organiser

Requested amount from Knight News Challenge:
$40,000
Total cost of project including all sources of funding:
$40,000
Expected amount of time to complete project:
6 months

Without any particular skills or training the 'Activity Organiser' would help people cooperate effectively to:

• Easily add, agree on & share tasks
• See WHAT needs to be done, WHEN & HOW
• Avoid one person needing to know it all & burn out
• Avoid reinventing the wheel
• Overcome tension between need for structure & the often casual
nature of volunteering
• Assert community 'ownership' of local knowledge & skill development

In an innovative way, these components are integrated into a simple 4 step online (or face to face) process for ordinary people - see mock up at: http://ntw.110mb.com/organiser.htm

How will your project improve the way news and information are delivered to geographic communities?

Shared Information - When You Need It!

As individuals and community groups create Activity Organisers around the world for anything from household environmental activities to garden and resource sharing projects they can choose to 'share' their organisers. All shared Activity Organisers will be indexed on the site where others will be able to access them. In this way cooperative community activities can be spread for free all around the world in a very practical and accessible format.

Where information is usuaslly buried in a book the Activity Organiser provides information in the very week you need it. eg: In the first week of October it will provide all the gardening jobs for that specific week. This makes the spread of information much more accessible and practical.

How is your idea innovative? (New or different from what already exists.)

A New Structure For Cooperation

No other organiser exists like this on the web. It will allow people to both organise and collaborate in an all together new and convenient way.

Importantly the organiser provides an access point to the ‘project plan’. The discussion forum then provides a way to have a say. In this way a project can benefit from the collective wisdom of the community. The simple job calendar and corresponding job cards also provide an automatic recording method, giving other communities elsewhere a generous starting point for any similar project.

The simple design of the Activity Organiser is tailored to the needs of neighbours who just want to get on with it but need an accessible, non-hierarchical way to organise.

What experience do you or your organization have to successfully develop this project?

Grassroots

The organiser was devised by a grass-roots group of people operating under the theme of ‘Neighbourhood That Works’ (http://www.ntw.110mb.com) NTW has played a leading role in such activities as setting up a neighbourhood Botanical Gardens ornamental planting program, a community notice board, writing and distributing a community newsletter and organising a car share program and social events. Through this and other past experience the group realised that the structure of how people organise themselves in the community needed to be improved. Three households conceived and have lead the development of this organiser in response to their own needs and those expressed by other people within the community. In our group we have qualified community work and project management experience as well as the strong support and formal auspice of our local Neighbourhood Centre where some of our members volunteer.
